Google's entire business model is predicated on taking *your* information and habits and selling it to other people. Period. They know more about you than you do. And the guise of "free apps" makes it even more insidious imho.
I still have a gmail account as that is pretty much necessary for youtube (though I've switched to vimeo for hosting videos). I still use their news feed but have been migrating to other solutions. I avoid their apps, don't use maps (even though other solutions aren't as good), don't use analytics.
It is essentially pissing up a rope, but individuals have a choice. I think google is the most dangerous entity around right now.
