For sure, experience helps. The rider is just one small part of the operation, though. So many guys working behind the scenes... Nonetheless, a guy like Rossi will remember the days when you had to manage the life of a tire over a race distance, he'll remember what a Michelin feels like, etc. Not that they all won't figure it out, but his experience counts for something.
If you read the comments from the riders after day one of the test, you'll note that even the big boys like Honda get sideways. Pedrosa mentioned that because the new electronics were so far off where they needed to be, he was really unable to learn much about the 2016 engine, which they were trying at the same time.
They always learn something, just not as much as they should.
