Yeah, keep in mind that you need cell service for Google maps to work. You can download maps (about 30 miles x 30 miles is the limit) while you have cell service for later use. This video goes through the process pretty quickly...

You can add a label that will appear on the map. With your location open, tap the three dots at the top right corner of the screen.
