To be fair, Boise and North ID aren't very much the same in that regard. N. ID is very insular and attracts the self-styled "patriot" types. It's hard to be an elitist when 95% of the rest of the PNW is politically to the left of these folks. Hayden used to be ground zero for the skinhead movement, after all. I never met so many openly racist folks in my whole life as I did in N. ID.
But Boise is a completely different place. Southern ID is more diverse and has a wider range of opinions, especially in Boise itself. I think you're right about Sandpoint, it's a nice place. I enjoyed all the times we skied at Schweitzer, too.
