With Android there really is no "choice" of OS.

The hardware vendors who use Android as an OS typically modify it a bit. And vendor specific apps / features so unlike Windows and OS X there is no master OS release / update. Whether the system gets updates or not is really dependent on whether the vendor feels like bothering. Meaning a system from vendor "X" may never see the most current OS even thought the device is capable of running it.

The NEXUS line of devices has been really good about being maintained with regular updates.

Although update support will likely only last for 2-3 years from when a particular model was released.

So if you buy a model that has been out a year expect 1-2 years of updates before it may be end of lifed.
