Years ago, USPS was notorious for mashing and mangling boxes. UPS came on the scene and did a great job. Now it's reversed. Boxes from USPS come through great, ones from UPS are mashed and torn.
UPS insurance only seems to be worth it if the box disappears entirely. Any damage to the item during shipment, even inside a crushed box, is claimed to be your fault for not packing it well enough.
