No. The spring could have been added. I have a 923/02 gearbox in mine, and a spring has been added to that.
But, I would have expected that a spring wouldn't have been present on a 1976 and would have been present on a 1977. You might look at the small coil spring that is attached to the little lever. On a transmission that was originally fitted with the omega spring, one end of the little coil spring has a place on the gearbox casting to attach it to and on ones that have been added, this is often absent.
