When I was a really young kid, my mother would make butter like that. We had a cow that got milked daily. My mother/parents would let the milk set until the cream came to the top. My mother would spoon it off into a Mason jar, put wax paper over the mouth of the jar, screw the lid down, and set in a chair rocking the jar back & forth. After a while lumps of butter would nucleate in the cream and float to the top if she stopped rocking it back & forth. She'd spoon them out into a saucer, mash them together, and drain the excess cream back into the Mason jar. I don't remember what it tasted like though.
