Glad you didn't crunch the front! I've always thought of the possibility of that happening.
You should replace the entire cable. It's easy! The rebuild on the cluster can wait. Better to be inspired when starting something IMHO. My best work comes when I go out to do something on the car, but end up doing another project on it. It's all about the "feel" of the moment. Ahh, wrenching is Zen!
