Question Fuel Pump - 914 4cyl 1972

Hey all, my fuel pump has died. Sad for sure, but even worse is dropping a good chunk of my pay check for a proper OEM replacement (ranging from 75 to >100 online). Is there truly something special / specific needed from the original, or can I purchase a more affordable after market general fuel pump with adjustable flow?
I know my engine is no longer stock, (bored out to 2.0L and carbureted now), but it worked just fine when the old pump was in place.

I'd love to know your thoughts. And no, I am not trying to keep it "pure", I enjoy having a car which is mine, functions well, and has a close semblance to the original within reason (I simply can't afford parts from the 70s).
Cheers,

-Andrew
