kitchen range on life support- gas or electric ?

The 7 year old GE electric range/oven is having issues with the large top burner........we can't control the heat output. Set it to low and it's glowing orange in 3 minutes ! Typical full of electronics type of oven it was in the house when we bought the house. Kitchen also has a gas line/shutoff already plumber for a range. So we have 3 options as I see it.
1.Try to repair existing unit.
2.Replace with another electric range
3.Replace with a gas range

Am I wrong in thinking that a gas range " should " be more reliable than electric ? I say that because I think there are less moving parts ? We swapped the bad burner for a good burner and same problem so it's not the burner so the problem is further upstream. And with holiday company due in a few days my time to solve the issue is VERY limited. Advice please
