Hey Janvisman - It looks like you are holding one of the 5 electrically controlled vacuum solenoids that is mounted on a common bracket along the lower back side of the center console. Here is one of the many discussions on the HVAC controls and a photo of the dismounted rack of solenoids -

I think just about every owner has had to chase down at least one or two solenoid related problems in the HVAC system. The 928 vacuum plumbing is color coded and isn't difficult to sort out once you have located all the components.
