I just read all of "The Expanse" novels and short stories. The style of writing, third person and switching characters each chapter, isn't perfect. But the stories are well setup.

It was originally going to be an online game. With the "universe" fully developed, and the origin story fleshed out, it was natural to turn it into a series of novels.

Technology is fully fleshed out extensions of where we are going. No warp drive, etc. "Gravity" is from spin or thrust. People living and growing up in minimal gravity develop differently physically than those down "gravity wells". Large sub-text of prejudice and racism of people growing up in the asteroid belt and other low gravity areas.

Socially, Earth as it is, is an extension of where we are heading today. People have a choice of living off the government on "basic" or going to work. Mars and the asteroids are like the former colonies. The smarter and more ambitious were in the diaspora, similar to those leaving for America. Tax issues, imposed on "colonies" from "Earth".

Stories are about a series of related "changes". I won't go into it/them, since that would be spoilers.

Syfy channel has created a series based, at least, on the first novel, Leviathan Wakes.
