In the early '70s, we used to drive down to Peahi (after our morning session @ Hookipa) just to sit and watch. We'd try to guess the wave size by how long the wave took to break. A couple friends paddled out one day (a feat in itself), and practically killed themselves. I lived only 3 miles down the coast, so I watched it a lot.
Fast forward 20 years, and the tow-in revolution changed everything. I really have to hand it to the paddle-in guys .. Peahi is terrifying from the water. Of course, these days they have rescue teams in place ..
