Anti-gov't protesters march through Burns
These men had already been to prison for their "crime" of burning 126 acres to control an invasive species. They served their sentences, were then released. A Federal prosecutor then went to a judge claiming their original sentence wasn't time enough. A federal Judge agreed.
The two news sources linked in the original post seem to neglect mentioning this part of the story, which really brought about the protests.

And you didn't mention that the story actually goes back more than a decade, and that these folks are repeat offenders. The clowns at the wildlife refuge are just small-time thugs who think waving around a firearm makes them somebody. Surround the place, cut off water and power, and arrest them when they come out. Fine them for trespassing and/or property damage, and send them home where they belong. I'm sure federal prosecutors could really get creative in getting them charged with crimes. I don't suppose the fact that very few of the locals want these clowns anywhere near the area makes any difference?
