I get the weight thing, and for serious off road, I have a weapon for that. But your not gonna ride any single on the road for hours at a time doing 80 of 85 miles per hour. I bought my Adventure bike for and I ride with guys who moto camp in Death valley do the Colorado BDR...etc.... the biggest thing I see with these big bikes really is that guys just don't know how to ride them...They are way more capable then you'd imagine. Some TKC80s and some skill go along way.....I'd say on 95% of the roads I ride, I'd say I'm faster on my big adventure bike then I am on my sportbikes.
