I think it depends a lot on function. I have a $200 Casio G-Shock that's supposed to be unbreakable. It updates time by radio (I believe tiny unicorns enter through a radio antenna and set the watch to the correct time every night), so it's also exactly right, period, never loses time. The face is a solar cell, so it charges itself. No winding, no battery changing, ever. Theoretically, this watch will last essentially forever.
If it's about durability, longevity, and accuracy, you can save an order of magnitude and do even better on all fronts. If it's about wearing a classic piece of history, well ... get the Omega.
