66 2.0 engine valuation

Short story; I have a '66 2.0 (#9037xx) that I bought maybe 5 years ago. It had been rebuilt (supposedly by a P shop, but have no documentation). It was used briefly as a sand rail motor, but was pulled because it lacked the torque the owner wanted. He said it sounded great. I saw the sand rail, and it was a very nice piece of kit.

The motor looks complete and original, except that it has webers in place of the original solexes. Per the owner, the P/C are probably 2.2 units, with an early S cam. Headers are present, but dinged up a bit. I haven't done a leak down or compression check, but since its been sitting awhile (always inside), I'm not sure what I would believe. I'm considering trying to start it, it turns by hand.

SO....

I'm seeing a fairly wide distribution of asking prices for these early ally motors, up to about $30K. I realize that earlier is more valuable. What is a reasonable expectation? I'm looking to fund a different automotive project, but don't have to sell if I don't want to. However, I may never actually use this particular motor.

Any informed comments are welcome.

Ron
