The difference in wheels is not offset, but the section of the wheel. This is best understood with pictures (but I don't have any). The later wheels have a square profile just inside the rim, where the deep 6s are round. The profile was changed in order to make the instalation of tires easier, and to make it possible to include a "safety bead." The Safety bead is a lump just inside each rim intended to prevent the tire from coming off the wheel in the event of a flat. In addiiton, the valve stem hole was reduced in diameter with the late 6s. This change occured with the '72 model year. You should be able to see the difference by inspecting pictures of early and late cars.
