As long as you're not trying to register it in California it's not a big problem. Cars >= 25 years old are exempt from DOT safety requirements in 50 states and EPA requirements in 49. Customs will want to see the import papers to prove federal import tax was paid though, so if this was done long ago and never registered and those papers are lost then that would be a concern.
