Happy wife, Happy life......My wife and I just went through this with her 2003 BMW 325 CI that has 200,000 miles. It needed a few things done to it, but ultimately, the repairs cost about 2 payments on a new one....I can afford to do that every year.
This is on a car we bought 3 years ago for $6500, I fully expect in another year or two, we will need to spend another $10,000 on a nice used one that will last for 5 years, and still be able to sell for a few thousand.
