hm - this will trigger a lengthy discussion as to whether swapping one into the other is safe. Bottom line, depending on the fault both can potentially cause more damage. In this case I would be a little concerned that the car in question doesn't have the original wiring. So 'd probably try the DME in question in a good car rather than the other way around.
But before that there are more tests that the OP can do to narrow it down.
