Trains don't push noise ahead of them, you don't hear them until too late. I used to do some survey work on tracks and you always had someone with you watching behind you. You will not hear the train. Like a bullet, you hear it when it went by.
In Costa Rica I was always amazed with the people, walk in the street with perfectly good sidewalk just feet away. Driving in the country at night and come up on Ticos laying in the street looking at the stars. I have been passed on uphill curve at the crest, lots of car wrecks in that country.
