I have kids, mine runs every day !!!
I even had this genius idea for the new house to have 2 dishwashers, and less shelf space. One dirty, one clean, rotate.... it would save me 10 min a day off unloading dishes from the clean into the cupboards ;-) (have kids, laugh at my 10 minutes a day idea later) That idea did not pan out as well as I thought it would (you never have all you need in the clean one anyway)

So no, if you don't need a dishwasher, then turn it into shelfspace or a wine cellar (if you or your wife drinks)! As far as using one for long term storage of dishes, I would not unless it's never been used, they smell funny eventually if not used regularly (stagnating water maybe? dunno, it just does).
