I got two Iphone4's from ATT right when they came out. I stopped upgrading mine after about a year. My wife kept hers current. She had quite a few problems with lockups, et cetera.

When I visited one of the most famous Apple Stores around here (Palo Alto), I asked one of the managers about this. He told me that although the company continues with updates on older products, often times it makes sense to avoid them as resources are not plentiful to sort out bugs and issues before releasing SW. When I pressed him, he said do not upgrade unless you have to. That was based on my phone's age and the then-current iOS updates.

Of course as a marketing professional often tasked with leading SW development efforts for legacy products, I already knew the answer. We don't just limit resources, we carefully leave irritants to gently encourage HW upgrades.

In my case, I just moved to Iphone 6s late last year. Will be upgrading for a while, but as has been my practice for years, I will stop at some point-- hopefully before a new iOS creates irritants.
