My chiropractor is a BMW guy and has attended the BMW racing school. He was the fastest in his class but still quite a bit slower than the professional drivers they had has instructors. He asked how they could be so much faster. They siad, "Easy, they aren't our cars."
I've heard several times that non-professionals driving Porsches are much closer to the times posted by professionals in Porsches than any other brand. They are just easier to get closer to the limits.
Have also had 3 different very good driving instructors ride with me to give me tips. Two of them told me I was doing better than they were. One of those kept yelling brake just a fraction of a second before I hit my braking point. The one that had any recommendation was to get stickier tires. The one with thei stickier tire comment let me drive his track prepped car. I not only out-did his times in his own car, but because he had sticker tires, out did my times in own car.
I don't know what they use to put cars in different classes or how the SSCA does its handicaps to make times comparatively competitive.
