It comes down to how much of a pain in the butt are you willing to deal with to save $100 or so. And/or how much TV you really watch... No wrong answer.
For example: A colleague at work torrents everything. It's piracy (if you care, maybe one day this will be enforced) and he has to pay/use a private VPN connection to torrent that stuff and not get nabbed by his internet provider (did you know they check? Well they do, think about what else you download - they know!!! Seems like a lot of work to me for $100 or so, and not everything is available in a timely fashion. But then again I change my own oil, and that guy looks at me funny when I mention that, he pays $30 at the local quicklube... whatever your pain threshold is !!!
I think the point regarding "creep" is the best one of the thread, it's not so bad as long as you stay on top of it and keep them honest. Nowadays you could use OTA and HBO go, for instance... Motorsport is really the only PITA... In the grand scheme of things, TV represents 1/15th of my daycare costs, 1/6th of my property taxes, etc... When the kid hits kindergarten, I could lease a ferrari ;-) (I won't)
