Hey bugstrider, good question I don't know. The only place I don't have the cloth wrapped one is my red rubber dizzy vacuum hose. The "blue" vacuum hose to the dizzy had already been replaced with a 3.5mm as above so I replaced mine with same. I guess the cloth insulates against the heat? I think the main thing is to use the proper diameter so it fits airtight on all the ports and make sure the hose is rated high enough so it doesn't collapse under vacuum.
