Well...you are correct when you say that checking the ATF fluid level is a PITA...cuz it is. You do have to check it from underneath at the location that you indicated, and that is also where you fill it. So you are going to need a pump. When you remove the red filler cap you should be able to read the dip stick. When I look at my ATF reservoir there are lines which indicate whether or the level is low, but they were painted on and may not be visible on yours anymore. I do check the level with transmission warm and while the manual does recommend using dex 3, dex 4, or synthetic will work just as well. I have used synthetic on my 88 S4 for the last 5 years and have noticed smoother shifting as a result.
