Once every 5 years wouldn't do anything IMO. Burn out all that crap in the p trap and be done with it. Leave in there for 10-15 min and wash it away. I have ABS in my house throughout, so it should be ok. I changed out all my plumbing about 20 years ago. Nothing like plumbing issues and it always happens during a time when I am super busy.
