Getting closer...
The PPI on the 1988 coupe came back 100% positive. The only things the mechanic could find to note were a couple of slightly worn belts, and the oil pressure sender is leaking a very small amount. He said, "It's one of the nicest cars I've seen." My wife gave me the OK to make an offer of $42k on it, so fingers crossed that it will be accepted.
I got some quotes on shipping from Atlanta to San Francisco, it's higher than I expected. $2200 from Intercity, $1900 from Passport. I don't want to cheap out on that though so I will just go with one of those two if I get it shipped. I would love to fly out and drive it back, but it's a long shot that my wife will give me a 4 day "hall pass" while she takes care of our two little kids.
Have any of you ever used an escrow service when buying a car out of state? Personally I'm a pretty trusting person, but this is a big chunk of money to just wire off to a stranger. I don't know how something like that would work though.
