In the 1960’s Vought extensively studied a concept for VTOL propulsion known as ADAM (Air Deflection and Modulation). This used a bank of horizontally oriented turbojets exhausting into a common manifold that formed the main structure of the wing and which drove larger-diameter fans. The exhaust from the jets, and the thrust from the fans, could be directed either aft for forward thrust or down for vertical thrust. Vought proposed the ADAM concept for everything from small single-seat fighters and ground attack aircraft to large military and commercial transports.

The formula, called "Air Deflection And Modulation" or "ADAM" was first applied to the V-460 project, an experimental single-seat subsonic to test the principle of propulsion and in 1965 in the form of V-480 supersonic project . The official services showed themselves not very interested and freed no development contract.

The Dallas consultants will nevertheless continued extrapolation formula and led, always in 1965, projects V-482 and V-485 "ADAM II", interception seater and two-seater of attack. The principle, however, was not not developed to the prototype stage and this VTOL family now seems abandoned.
