Just helped a friend of mine buy a Boxster -- and I found that prices have not changed appreciably since I last posted on this thread.
He ended up buying a very clean triple black '01 S, under 70k miles, for well under $13k. With a recent LN IMS, new clutch, new cooling system, and new tires.
At the same time I've been looking at 996 prices, and anecdotally, it looks to me like they have ticked up since bottoming out in 2013-2014. I'm not seeing any for sale under $12k, and those without galactic miles are in the high teens to low 20s.
It makes sense that the movement of everything air-cooled into the $30s would pull up the 986/996 cars that had already fully depreciated.
I'm not saying you can't find a trashed out 996 cheap, but a decent driver appears to be worth $3-5k more than in 2014, and there are a lot fewer inexpensive ones for sale.
The class action settlement and availability of the IMS fix may have cleared up some of the clouds hanging over that generation of cars. If you get a good one, they are brilliant values.
