This is one of the sticky wickets about this discussion: there's very little data about crimes that didn't happen. We hear about it when someone actually gets shot, and there are statistics when crimes are completed. But how many times does someone draw their carry-spoon and deter a Bad Thing? I've seen numbers as low as about 60,000 per year to numbers as high as roughly 500K per year. The fact that the estimates vary that much should tell us that we really don't know.
