Quark was the first program to check it's license on-line every time you launched it. If your computer didn't have internet access it would check for it's serial number on the local network. If you didn't have network hooked up, it ran fine. If you connected after starting the program and would start checking in the background. If it found the license was not good, or a duplicate existed on the network it would run and do everything but save.
