My Granddad on my Dad's side always had a jug of moonshine. Every morning as he sat up in bed he would take a snort. Every night before he crawled under the covers he would take another. He lived to be 92.
And I know it was moonshine too. Distinctly remember riding the the car with Dad and Granddad when I was very young. We were out driving in the country around the small town in Oklahoma. We stopped and Granddad put a jar with some cash in it in a stump near the side of the road. We left driving around talking about the farms and who lived there and who used to live there. After a little while we drove back by the stump. Granddad got the jar now full of clear liquid. Granddad said it was his stump water.
My Grandmother had passed before I was born. They used to live on and run a farm outside of town (where my Dad grew up). By the time I came along Granddad lived in a small little cottage type house in town with a flagstone drive, detached single car garage, and a white picket fence. Surrounding the fence and house were flower beds with all kinds of flowers and shrubs. His lawn and gardens were always ideally immaculate. He owned and ran the towns laundromat. He had a black maid that came in and cooked and cleaned for him.
