I got bored and tried to do oak vs red oak vs walnut, but after looking at them I'm not convinced. Maybe Amail is right, stay plain, or maybe the sides need to be stained too. Hell- you aren't even asking what color to do it in- just what type of finish. Why can't I find this type of stuff on CL?
