The factory had seen situations where cars would actually get pulled out of gear due to driveline movement relative to the shifter. The solution was to introduce fore/aft play into the linkage.
This isn't something I need to worry about in my race car since the transaxle and engine mounts are all solid and the cage stiffens up the car between the shifter and the transaxle.
