That's a good question; I get the impression that exhaust is very personal, in that different people have different ideas about what's preferable, but I kind of view it like wine: the cheap exhaust sounds cheap -- lots of drone, etc. -- but the mid-range exhaust (Fabspeed, Remus) is well worth the money and the really expensive exhaust (Tubi) is better, but probably not "better enough" to justify the cost. At least not to me.
I am profoundly happy with the Fabspeed Maxflo setup (no headers here -- just cat-back). The stock Cayman is simply too quiet. I recognize that all mid-range sports cars are going to be compromised from the factory because most people think they want a real sports car, but what they actually want is a luxury GT. I want a real sports car.
The Fabspeed exhaust is quite a bit louder than stock. Like, it wakes up my wife if I start it in the garage because I decided to drive it to work in the morning. You can literally hear it coming from a mile away. BUT it's not Harley-Davidson loud; it sounds like a high-end performance car. It's pretty much the right level of loudness, and it really highlights the best sounds from the flat-six. I haven't noticed ANY drone from the Fabspeed Maxflo. It's a really, really good mid-range setup.
