I had a night a little over two years ago I went near top of 4th to 5th. 5th, acceleration about gives out in 5th, but I was surprised it was still pushing faster. I am not sure how level the road was, very rolling area. I'd say 125MPH is a reasonable speed for the '86 944 to attain. Past that, it probably takes several miles of road to keep going faster. The torque curve is shrinking as RPM increases.

The situation that I put on the extra speed for did not allow any observation of the speedometer. I probably saved a life that night, but the world is not made of if's to know. Kudos to the King's Mountain police department for taking the guy I was following off the road. I found 120MPH+ in a 944 on a public road to be much scarier than I would want to put myself in without cause. Even if I did look at the speedometer, I don't trust its accuracy as I've never verified it.

I think it'd take about five miles of level straight road to get a early 944 much over 130MPH. 120MPH is within the realm of 4th gear and quite doable.
