Back when I was a kid we lived on base at Maxwell AFB in Alabama. They have two golf courses and the one close to our house was full of cart paths that were fun to ride our bikes on when the course was closed. One day a thunderstorm popped up and we all dove for the shelter of the numerous rain & lightening shelters. They are much like picnic table with the roof overhead. The blowing wind was getting us wet but that was better than being in the direct rain. There were three of us sitting there.
All of us noticed our hair standing up and thought that was cool. Then a tremendous and simultaneous flash of lightning and thunder rocked us all. We were all blinded and deaf for a little while. It was terrifying. We finally got our senses back and the rain had almost stopped. We inspected the shack and the lightning rod on top of the shelter was partially melted. It was obvious the bolt hit the shed and the bolt of lightning was just a few feet from hitting us.
I don't ever was to get that close to lightning ever again.
