I saw an interview with someone from Mazda who said it's not stiffer. Because the MX5 is designed from the ground up to be a convertible, it already has a very stiff body. The hardtop/sail structure don't add any rigidity.

I'm just not a convertible fan. This, I wouldn't mind. On the rare occasions I would open the top, I'd imagine much less wind in the cabin with the targa-like arrangement. But, I wouldn't feel like a dork having a convertible with the top up on nice days either.
