I’m not sure there is a replacement for high zinc content. I only run VR1 for this reason.

Pretty sure VR1 is the best oil ever for porsche aircooled turbo engines.

Just curious, what makes it better than AMSOIL 20/50 and the Z-Rod version of the 20/50, both high Zinc. Not trying to be argumentative at all, you just stated it was best ever. I may need to change what I’ve been using for the last 105,000 miles!

personally, just me imho, but I'd be to scared of coking using non synth oils, regardless of zinc levels, especially seeing what my brother went thru with coking in his 930. There are synth alternatives out there with added zinc....I will say, that with the exception of my first oil change at 34,500 miles, I have exclusively used AMSOIL 20/50 high zinc formula, changed the oil every 5K, had it analyzed, at each oil change, and it always came back with continue to use. I now have 140K miles on the car.

I love these oil discussions, so polarizing for our crowd!

So, what did the good ol' boys run back in the 70's and 80's in their turbos when synthetics were just a pipe dream....and how come they all didn't end up with coke-head turbos and plugged oil ways.....or did they?

And Rich, next time don't tell the world about your good finds. Just PM me; might keep the prices stable for a bit longer :-)

yeah, they are funny, a lot of non-technical opinions, including mine! I have to go with my gut, and what I feel comfortable with...

930XXXX is just talking crazy. There are far "better" oils out there if one goes by testing data and is willing to pay the higher prices for the better oils. Who knows if any of that will make one bit of difference for a street operated engine, however (although I have seen it make a big difference in component longevity of race engines).

synthetic was designed for hi heat applications, jet engines.
with dyno oil you risk the chance of coking in the turbo. I have seen first hand what can happen when a turbo gets coked up and then it comes lose. it WILL do far WORSE damage to your engine than an oil with a little less zinc in it will do.
I have seen a spray bar hole get plugged, eat up a cam lobe and a rocker face.
this was just a spray bar hole, imagine it getting to a bearing.

your valve guides will wear out long before your valve train using mobile 1.

ask timC about his analyzed oil reports with "low zinc" oil. he has 140k+ on his engine and it runs incredible.

^^^^Agree 100%. Proof, 250k, over 120 track weekend over many years.
More recent rebuild indicated lots of life left on bearing, lobes, etc.

Ha sorry surely didn’t mean to incite a 930 riot.

Mark next time I’ll jsut PM you. Sorry you used it. They sure changed the price quickly. I have it saved in amazon under my “save for later” list and have a google chrome add on called honey that sends me emails when something in my list has had a price drop.

Going from 80 something to 51 made me hop on the deal.

I have had coking in the past using Brad Penn oil. When I found the pieces of coked oil I thought they were broken chips of chain ramp in my oil filter. Luckily that was before I rebuilt the engine.

This is just so precious! Mr. T77911S claims that your engine is toast...are you not aware it's toast by now? Pray tell there may be other extenuating circumstances outside of oil choice.

And so the debate continues. Dinosaurs lived for millions of years, so that alone says something positive about their "squeezings".

And if anyone is concerned about coking up the turbo and cutting loose particles to fark up your cam lobes, there is a remedy whereby the installation of a small filter post-turbo return will catch those nasty particles.
