Euro 930 Engine and Tranny serial no. mismatch

Hi, folks.

I'm trying to figure out engine/tranny serial number logic on my '84 930, and/or the possibility of whether the engine has been swapped out. I have no paperwork evidence that it has been swapped, only a serial number inconsistency.

The option sticker and Redbook (based on delivery date) say that the car should have "E" Program serial numbers on both the engine (67E) and tranny (77E).

The tranny number starts with 77E and matches the COA, but the engine number does not and has a 67F serial number, which the Redbook says they didn't start using until a few months later.

Has anyone else seen this mismatch? Perhaps they started using the 67Fs before the Redbook says they did... and the COA is incorrect... or the motor was swapped out for a slightly later one at some point.

TIA

I’ve never checked the numbers on my 81 but I’m pretty certain they’re both original to the car.
I post my numbers if you think it’ll be helpful.

Thx. Redbook doesn't show much on the tranny numbers for prior to 84, but engine serial should start with 671 or 67C.

The Redbook has many errors, but this isn't one of them. I would trust the COA on this. You've got a later engine in your car.

Thanks again for the info.

I spoke to the original owner and he did, in fact, have the motor swapped out back in 1986. It threw a rod due to overboost, so they ordered a new one from Porsche ($13K) and swapped it out. The timing jives with the serial number.

Interesting that he didn't have to pay for it. He said insurance covered it (not sure if he meant warranty).
