cams

So my mechanic, calls me today and tells me that I am going to need new cams and rockers . Anyway this is my build right now.
3.5 liter motor 8.1 comp supertec build twin plug, I run 14lb boost.
EFI with 3.0 liter pancake manifold ported to 37mm
B&B headers
Garret GT25 billet turbo
I have 964 cams right now.
full bay Bell intercooler
Is there a recommondation for cams. I was happy with the 964s but just checking in to see if there is a better option.
Thanks John

I have no idea on recommendation for the cams. Did you find out the cause of bad cams and rockers?

Better how? This will depend on your driving style and where you want the power band. How high are you comfortable revving your engine?

he thinks it was caused by the oiling, thinks the oil holes are clogged. He going to clean them out.
He says the cams can be reground but he recommends need rocker arms.

I am older now but I like to give it a rip once in awhile lol. I normal dont rev it about 6500-7000. I don't want to go back on power. The car ran really nice. Just thought I would see if there is anything new and wonderfull lol.
Thanks John

Curious about the GT25...wouldn't a GT35 suit you better, given the mods you have planned?

There are a few cams available that will increase your top end, but typically at the expense of your bottom end. The other consideration is the added lift and duration will need to be addressed. You will need to make sure that you will not have any piston to valve problems or problems with coil bind. If you go to Dougherty Racing Cams Porsche 911, 930 and 964 camshaft profiles you will find a few choices.

We’ve had great luck with the DC21 cams from Dougherty on the 993tt builds. I am also running it in my 993 turbo conversion. The ideal cam timing events will change based on CR and turbo back pressure. The cam uses 993RS intake profile with GT2 exhaust profile. It’s a mild/moderate cam and gives great street manners. Don’t overlook the GT2 profile either. Open it up a bit (113?) for better idle and low speed manners. If you’re really bold go DC24. That one should be a screamer! Not sure how snappy the off boost response is with GT2 or DC21 though. Call John to discuss your car, driving patterns and what’s important to you. He won’t steer you wrong.

Check with Chris as Turbokraft on the Edelweiss cams - he has spoken highly of them in the past.

Hi,

964 cams will work really well with your displacement and 8:1 CR. Perfectly smooth idle <1,000rpm (900-950rpm typical) and power until 5,800-6,200rpm.
993SS (mechanical version of 993RS) has yet more light and slightly more duration -- nice if well-ported heads.

If you want something more aggressive, and your pistons have at least moderate valve pockets, there's GT2 (slightly lumpy idle), or Doughterty's slightly more aggressive DC-35 Turbo profile.

Those are all suitable for street use, good torque and responsiveness.

Slightly off-topic, but would the mahle 3.4 pistons clear the gt2 cams?
