I bought a set of used carerra tensioners .I know I have to bleed them submerged in oil but do I have to collaspe and install pins b4 I install them?

It sure would make the installation of the tensioner a whole lot easier if you did.

can i compress in a vise?

Yes you can. But put something on the jaws of the vise so the tensioner is not damaged in any way. Be very patient and s-l-o-w-ly tightened the vise on the tensioner. You'll find the oil weeping out the bleed valve, nothing to be alarmed about. You'll almost have to completely compress the tensioner before the pin will slip in the hole.

Put the tensioners in a can with oil. Let them fill, then pump them until no air escapes, then install the pins.
That is the easy part...
To hold the chain tight so that the timing doesn't change I used some plastic strips. They held the chain in place without doing any damage. Then slide off the old tensioner, and replace it with the hydraulic one. Remember that you need a distance ring with the hydraulic tensioner (it is thinner at the end than the pressurised one)...
To keep the cam covers drip-free, use some heat-resistant silicone (orange) on the lower part...
