High Temperature
Hi,
I just finished building my 1977 , 930 Turbo, I started with a tub and added every thing else. The car starts well and runs well but the heat behind the rear bumper is very high. It appears to be a muffler heat . I am concerned that the heat may melt the Porsche reflector that runs above the license plate. Also the bumper itself is very hot. I have a heat shield installed inside the rear bumper but it is not helping. Do you think that the heat will dissipate when car is driven or will increase ? Do you think the engine is running to hot and requires additional cooling ? Please let me know if you have a solution to this issue or if you have any recommendations . Many thanks in advance. |

The rear bumpers get HOT on 930's at a standstill, it's mostly from the turbo.
I believe there are multiple heat shields? Have you checked ignition timing? If it's retarded the EGT will go up considerably, even at idle Too rich or lean AFR won't help either. Does your engine have an air pump system, if it doesn't turnoff, it could affect EGT as well. There are thermo-vacuum valves originally to turn off the air injection when the engine warms up, if one of these was overlooked or bypassed it could cause high EGT... Perhaps take some readings off the bumper w/ infrared probe and report back w/ more details i.e. ambient temp, run time since cold, etc. etc. Good luck

Mine gets really hot too.
Too hot to touch at times and I wondered the same about the reflector, paint, etc. but it still looks good as new. BTW I have no air pump/injection.

It is the nature of the beast. Mine gets real hot also about 140* or so. No problems after 30 years.

Thanks for your input.
The temperature at the gauge is about 200* and almost 130* at the Bumper and reflector. I will take the car for Ignition timing and see what effect this will have on high temp. I will post results Thanks again |

Check ignition timing, if delayed headers will glow and everything gets very hot. Turbo bearings don't like it either. Remove and plug air injection if legal in your state. (six 10x1 plugs needed).

My 964 one is a little warped too, but only on the back where it's not seen.
