You can just change the barrel... there is a online web site that specializes in 2 and 3 piece racing wheels but I can remember the address right now.

Are these aluminum or magnesium ? I had some aluminum 3 piece BBS rims and they also had cracking. I guess there pretty fragile. How old is this set?

935TURBO 10-19-2008 11:36 AM

They are magnesium rims.....they were quite new....11" x 17"......

Not to question you, but the wheel center looks cast aluminum and to be honest, so does the wheel half from the way it fractured I've had both cracked magnesium wheel centers and halves that have never looked like that. I've had magnesium wheels dated from the mid 90s to 2003 that didn't look like those and I know the newer ones don't.

Where did you get them from and are you sure they are BBS? I'm on an iPhone and it's hard to see the name.

No comments......that's the reason of this thread......

I've had cracks form at the bead lip which progressed inwards. These are not high life cycle parts and were never intended for street use.

So Jim.....shall I got alu insides...?....if that's avalable....?....

Jim2 10-19-2008 01:39 PM

? yes the halves are aluminum. The honeycomb center (gold part) is cast magnesium.

They must have a distributer in Europe http://www.bbs-racing-wheels.com/Seiten/frameE.htm

Yes, thanks Jim....I know them....and the girl at the sales department is really helpfull.....but I was wondering if that was normal.....and if that kind of problem often happen....?

Serge - Sorry to see that happen to you. Did you paint the inners because I have never seen that finish before. As said before, you can just order new halves, but this time, get the heavy duty TI50 inners.

A930Rocket 10-19-2008 05:31 PM

Who ever built them did not use the proper aluminum ring and gasket between the two halves it looks like.

Of course, I've been wrong before.

A930Rocket 10-19-2008 05:32 PM

Are all the halves stamped with BBS on them in addition to the stickers? Lots of wheel halves are interchangeable.

It looks like you are correct as the aluminum ring would have left a little more gap between the halves.

935TURBO 10-20-2008 12:32 AM

I'll check all that and let you know ....the wheels will be taken off the car today....
The painting is a very very thin coat, done by a professionnal (FIXALU, specialised for rim works)....and I did it for protecting the inside of the rim against the brake dust....

WPOZZZ 10-20-2008 12:36 AM

Just be glad that you found the crack and it didn't find you at high speeds.
