front mount oil cooler???
I have recently purchased an 83' 930 and am wondering if a front mount oil cooler would be recommended for the track days that this car will see? Prob 4-6 DE's this summer that are already on the books.
If so, what brands, make, etc. would be recommended? The car is stock except for a complete top end and rebuilt turbo. Thanks.

I would say yes. The cooler you can keep the oil the better. I have a Setrab, but the model number escapes me. It's at least 20-22" x 6" x 2". Use -12 lines at a minimum.
Mounting it is not a problem but do you have an air dam that allows for an oil cooler opening? Or will you modify your valance? |

I think
I think the setrab is a 172 model number. I dont have one but have looked into it in the past.
I will check and chime back in when I have the info. Thanks, Bryan |

Thanks guys! The car currently has the stock front valance so I will need to change that out as well, or modify mine to work.

For track use, you will definitely *require* an oil cooler. There is literally no way your car will survive - no exaggeration - track use without one.
Unless you like 15 minute run sessions ;-)

The local PCA group does 18-20 minute run sesions so I might get lucky in the short term, but I am thinking long term here for sure.
I know the trombone cooler on my 88' 911 was enough for that car, but with the heat that the turbo creates I am sure the 930 will not be as lucky with the factory cooler.

For me, the biggest shortcoming a 930 has is the oil temp problem - it is huge.

Is the Setrab that the guys speak above a good choice for someone that will be driving the car on the street mainly, but will also be looking at 4-6 DE's a summer?
Any others that might be worth considering?

Cristine has a fender mount with a fan and one in the nose. More oil = more cooling 180 on hot day running hard. She's also running on Aero Shell aircraft oil,it is made for air cooled piston motors.

Setrab-172 is the biggest oil cooler that will fit in the normal array of lower valences with provision for central mount coolers.
The trombone is useless in the turbo.....at least get a Carrera cooler with fan for most city driving and traffic duty. For track work you will need this and a front mount cooler. Currently I run 6-10 DE days per summer and after 10-12 minutes or so the oil in my 79 930 with the above mentioned Carrera cooler was approaching 240 degrees. My car is putting out about 360h.p. with the mods I have got, and this is directly related to heat that goes into the oil that is basically cooling your engine.....along with the air from the fan. Did I like the fact that now I gotta install another front mount cooler and replace my stock lower spoiler....NO! But you do what you gotta do to get the oil temps down to under 210-220 degrees. ----why not install the biggest oil cooler you can then? Elephant racing has nice pictures of an install and sells a good kit....sorry about advertising for a competitor to Pelican, but trying to give you some helpful info on these forum.

Thanks guys. This is good information. I was assuming that the turbo would come close to the top line in temps when at the track...but did not know the extent of it. You have shed some serious light for sure.
I guess this might be the first mod to the car then... Are their any write up on installing a fan for the Carerra cooler, etc.? Just wondering if anyone has the links off the top of their head?

It is. It's a day-ender or at the very least a session-ender for sure.
Makes you wonder how these things left the factory and passed sustained full-throttle tests on the Autobahn etc etc in the first place......

There is an option, install the cooler modifying the OEM front valance. Temps at the track went to 180* from 230 before.

in the ongoing quest for lower engine/oil temps, are those fin type coolers that replace the "S" shaped oil line any good in addition to say the stock and a front mounted oil cooler? My buddy runs one on his vintage 911 race car and swears by it???

Do you have close up pics of yours for reference? Seems like a great option for many. Quote:

Are you asking if replacing the stock fender cooler with a finned tube cooler vs a Carrera and front oil cooler would be enough? There's not much air flow at speed and certainly at a stand still that I would feel good about either type fender oil cooler only for the track. No experience or knowledge on how effective a finned tube cooler is. Quote:

My 02 cents. I would suggest the Setrab 272 (I think). The same size as the 172 but diaganol for more cooling efficiency. If I had to do it again, and I might, I would go with AN16 fittings instead of the AN12 ones I have.

This is why I love this board... learn something new everyday from people that have been there before. Sometimes 2 or 3 times before.
![]() I would be interested in seeing pics of your "modified" front valence Miguel as well. That might be an option until I can get the front valence and cooler I want.

Bryce - Not useful for our cars.
930s heat up the oil in extreme amounts, this would not work for us. The 930 I own has 3 oil coolers and I need every bit of them for track days - granted, it is pretty high hp comparatively.
