Broken key and door handle
 

So, my 82 930 has one key broken off in the ignition and the drivers door handle is busted. How hard are the ignitions to get out on these cars? Would it be cheaper to re use the existing lock cylinders or would it be cheaper to look for a complete keysets (handles and ignition)?

And what is this key in the door for?

The key switch in the door is for the factory alarm which has a separate key.

Have you tried getting the broken key out?
I managed to get mine out with a pick or my pocket knife or something (don't remember).
The switch is kind of a pain to get out but a new one is like $600.00 or something ridiculous like that. If you can get the key out a good cleaning and lube my fix it.

Pete, I am going to try and get the key out. My thoughts were to get the ignition out and I thought I could bang it out.... But maybe I'll try and get it out with a pick. Then hopefully I can just cut a key from that one.

When I got my 930 years ago, all it had was the ignition key and a key fob for the electric door locks. I wanted a key that would work for both the ignition and the door locks. So, I searched around a bit and found someone that had a bunch of lock tumbler pins that he shipped me, so that I could disassemble the door locks and re-pin them to work with the ign. key. Pretty easy getting the door locks out and pulling all the pins...then just trial and error to find the right combination of pins to line up correctly with the key. I ended up using just couple of the pins that the guy sent me, and sent the rest back to him.

As for the alarm key, I don't have that one either but did eventually buy a key blank. Someday I'll take the entire lock assembly out and have a "smith" make a key for it - though I don't really need it since I've an aftermarket alarm system.

I've never done the ignition lock assembly. Take the whole thing out and give to a lock smith.

The good part of this is, I do commercial door and hardware install, so i have a locksmith that will help me with the keying.

From what I am getting from your comment, the door key is not the same as the ignition key on these cars? I thought they were like old VW's and the door and ignition were keyed alike. Or did you just have a mix match.

As for the factory alarm, I am going to take all of it out. I used to own a stereo shop years back, so I will be doing a full security install when I remake the wire harness to incorporate the EFI controls.

I think the two locks are normally keyed separately. Would have to check my owners manual to be sure. Or, I just got mixed match. Who knows what previous owners had done. Either way, I like having one key for all.
Oh...almost forgot...neither did the key I received fit the trunk lock. I ended up buying a used complete lock cable/pull/ with key on evil-bay for a great price. Now I'm all set except for the glove box lock with no key. When will it all end???

I left my factory alarm in...no harm, since I'm not using it anyway. Resale value...not that I really care and will be a cold day in hell before I part with this car!

I'm pretty sure the alarm and ignition keys are the same. Same for the trunk pull lever and glovebox.

If you can get the key out, the locksmith should be able to do it and re-key all as needed.

thanks, I am going to see if I can get the key out of the ignition and try to find a replacement door handle for the drivers side and swap out the cylinder in it.

On my car and other 911s I've had, they are all keyed alike.

I'm sure you're correct. With mine, obviously the PO at one point had replaced the ignition switch and never botherd to have all the other locks rekeyed to the new ign. key....left it for me to do. Unfortunately not all the various locks are easily taken apart by your average shadetree mechanic (the door locks being the exception).

The 78-83 factory service manual states:
"The alarm system is switched on and off with a separate key. the alarm switch is located on the face of an opened driver's door."
It also goes on to state:
"Spare keys are not available for the alarm switch. The alarm switch must be replaced, if the key is lost"
I was able to use a key blank from a Honda motorcycle for a spare alarm key.

Hmmmm. I think I would rekey the ignition switch as you can then order factory cut keys with your VIN.

wait, I can still order a key by VIN on a Euro car? That may save me some time and trouble.

I think you can go to the dealer and ask. They can probably pull up the info at PCNA and get the key code, have it cut and then sent to you. I know my 91 turbo had that done so I think it can still be done for your car. It is just a matter of asking, but since the ignition cylinder was changed, the key probably won't work. You'll need to re-code the pins, but that is pretty easy to do.

all my cylinders are original. Nothing has been changed yet, I need a door handle and there is a key broken in the ignition.

I have a stash of tumbler pins I always re-keyed every thing for 1 key fits all. If you get to that point I'll send the stash and you can send back what you don't need.

Then give the dealer a try. You will need to bring down a copy of the title. Sometimes they ask for the front and the back. Hopefully you can get the key out with a pick.

I can bring the VIN for verification..... as in the actual VIN tag that fell off the dash(poor leather wrap). LOL... But for the record NH doesn't offer titles for cars over 15 years old.

I don't think I can pick the key out, I wanted to get the ignition cylinder out of the car and I figured I could knock the remainder of the key out and get a blank and copy the remainder of the factory key.

Up until yesterday I could turn the ignition on and off with a screw driver, but someone pushed the "key" in too far, so I need a new solution.

Do you have access to dental picks? Those are really thin and may be able to get them out.
